ASU Will Study Archeological Heritage of Crimea

An agreement on creating consortium “Pontic Area of Inter-civilizational Contacts in Ancient and Middle Ages (cultural and historical context)” was signed online by the chiefs of nine scientific and educational institutions of Russia. Astrakhan State University is one of the founders of the consortium.

Along with ASU, the consortium includes V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, Southern Federal University, Sevastopol State University, Crimean Engineering and Pedagogical University named after Fevzi Yakubov, North Ossetian State University after K.L. Khetagurov and Magnitogorsk State Technical University named after G.I. Nosov. Besides, the consortium includes representatives of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Institute of Material Culture History and Institute of Crimean Archeology.

Consortium activities will be aimed at forming a network of leading HEIs and scientific organizations that do archeological research in Crimea, studying the diversity of archeological cultures of the peninsula and adjacent areas in the context of changing social and natural conditions.

ASU Rector Konstantin Markelov noted that the cultural heritage of Southern Russia is in the scope of the university’s scientific interests. The university runs the Institute of Southern Russia & Northern Caspian Region Issues Research and Lower Volga Archaeology School. Scientists and students of the Historical Faculty conduct archeological expeditions on a regular basis.
