ILO Expert Tells Staff and Students of ASU CITS about Specific Features of Scientific and Technical Translation

Staff members and MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation had a unique opportunity to communicate in-person with Head of the English Translation Service of the International Labour Organization Russell Duffin. The meeting took place within the framework of his first visit to Astrakhan.

The event was organized in the format of a round table Aspects of Scientific and Technical Translation at ILO which was attended by the first- and second-year MA students and staff members of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation of ASU.

After getting acquainted with the audience, the expert spoke about the International Labour Organization in general, specific features of working for it and the requirements for translators and their work. Then Mr. Duffin gave the participants the opportunity to practice translation on the example of news materials and discuss approaches to the translation of journalistic texts.

During his visit, the guest also met with Rector of Astrakhan State University Konstantin Markelov. One of the topics of the conversation was the renewal of the on-site internship programme for MA students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation in specialized UN agencies, which was suspended two years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now with the situation gradually stabilizing, there is a chance that the programme will be restarted this summer.

At the end of the conversation, the colleagues discussed the possibility of conducting an extended intensive course with BA linguistics students of ASU. Such classes will help the students immerse themselves in their future profession and get additional motivation.
