Saints Cyril and Methodius Day Celebrated at ASU
Every year all the Slavic countries celebrate the Saints Cyril and Methodius Day (aka the Slavonic Literature and Culture Day) in commemoration of the two great missionaries who lived in the 9th century and influenced the cultural development of all Slavs enormously.
In honor of this holiday, Rev. Alvian Tkhelidze from the Akhtubinsk Eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church gave his lecture “Impact of Church Slavonic Language upon Modern Russian Literary Language” at the Znamensk Branch of Astrakhan State University.
For Father Alvian, giving lectures to students is not something new, as he heads the Missionary Department at the Akhtubinsk Eparchy and gives lectures in Theology at the Tsaritsyn Russian-Orthodox University of Reverend Sergey of Radonesh (Volgograd, Russia). He told much about the history of the Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets, as well as about the difference between the terms “Church Slavonic language”, “Old Church Slavonic language”, and “Old Russian language”. Then he answered to our students’ numerous questions.
