ASU Research Is Aimed at Addressing Caspian Issues

Every August 12, all five Caspian states celebrate the Day of the Caspian Sea. This date is associated with the signing f the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea in 2016 in Tehran.

90% research carried out at Astrakhan State University today is focused on addressing the issues of the Caspian Sea Region and developing active international collaboration.

Priority topics include ecology and biotechnology to improve the quality of life in the Caspian region, preservation and restoration of unique biological resources, soil-environmental monitoring of natural and anthropogenic landscapes of arid territories and assessment of the degree of soil degradation in the Caspian region, production of eco-friendly agricultural products and digital agro-industrial complex in the Caspian region, design of marine robots and their digital twins, integrated security and geopolitics of the Caspian macro-region, linguocultural diversity and linguistic communications of the Caspian states.

The university runs a number of unique divisions that support the research, like the Institute for Institute for Southern Russia and Caspian Region Studies and the Department of Social, Political and Economic Research of Eurasia & Orient.

ASU heads the Commission for Science, Research and Technology within the framework of the Association of State Universities and Research Centers of the Caspian Region States and unites the efforts of scientists to address common issues of the scientific development of society, create a single information scientific space, and support the most promising research areas.

Since 2019, Astrakhan State University has initiated and held international forums on topical political, economic and environmental issues of the Caspian macroregion.

“Astrakhan State University sets itself the task to coordinate the research and educational policy in the Caspian region. ASU scientists conduct research on a whole range of issues, from geopolitics and integrated security to the development of agriculture,” says ASU Rector Konstantin Markelov.
