Talking about the Important: Konstantin Markelov Talks to ASU College Students

The rector of Astrakhan Tatishchev State University discussed such an important topic as patriotism and love for the motherland with the first years as part of the project of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.

This is not the first meeting that took place at our university thanks to Talking about the Important programme. The rector of Astrakhan State University talked to young people about patriotism, and also asked them what places they are proud of in their native land. The students mentioned the Kremlin, the biosphere reserve, the Saray-Batu complex, the Opera and Ballet Theatre. And the story of Konstantin Markelov about the history of his family, and about Georgy Polyakov, an ASU professor of honour, and his space elevator project helped to get closer to finding one’s mission in this world.

Next came a quiz consisting of eight questions about the dates of important events in the history of Russia.

At the end of the event, Konstantin Markelov asked the students what the word ‘motherland’ means to them. ‘Family’, ‘home’, ‘the place where I will return’, ‘country’, ‘the land on which I was born’ – this is how the latter answered. Those who remained silent have yet to find the answer to this question.
