“Club of Youth Mathematicians” Reveals Best Secondary School

On May 06, 2014, Astrakhan State University hosted the Club of Merry Mathematicians - contests for students of Astrakhan’s secondary schools. Students from five schools were to tackle tasks whose goal was to reveal which of them is the fastest and the most quick-witted one.

The contests “Club of Merry Mathematicians” have been arranged by our Department of Mathematics & Information Technologies and by the Admission Commission of ASU. The contests agenda included a preliminary task and three stages. During the first stage, the contest participants had to find the right answer within a very limited time. During the 2nd stage, “Marathon”, one had to tackle just one problem extremely quickly. And at the 3rd stage, team captains were to contest with each other; the captain of the team from the School for Gifted Children has won it. It was this school that has won the contests. The 2nd place has been granted to Secondary School 4 from Kamyzyak, whereas the 3rd place has been gained by Lyceum 1 from Kamyzyak as well.

“It’s always interesting to work with secondary school students”, Dr. Denis Shatskov, Deputy Dean of the Department of Mathematics & IT, confesses. “It means not just good cooperation with schools - that’s a real link with people who are as interested in Math as us”. The contests “Club of Merry Mathematicians” have already become a good tradition for ASU; the number of teams and participants is constantly rising. In the end, the participants have thanked the contest organizers for such an interesting and useful event.
