Council of International Federation of Translators Now Includes Expert from Astrakhan

Professor Olga Egorova, Director of the Institute of Language & Communicative Business Strategies of Astrakhan State University, Director of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation, has become one of the 17 members of the Council of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), one of the world’s most prestigious institutions in this field.

In early August 2014, a World Congress of the FIT has been held in Berlin. The Russian delegation has been headed by President of the Union of Translators of Russia. Prof. Egorova has been one of the Russian delegates. Elections to the FIT Council have been one of the key issues on the World Congress agenda; 17 “top managers” of the world translation and interpreting community have been elected. Prof. Egorova has been elected Council Member for three years, until the next Council elections are held. The Council is the governing body of the FIT; its members represent a community of the most respectable experts from various countries of the world. The Council members are elected during a secret ballot procedure from a range of candidates selected by countries participating in the International Federation of Translators.

Membership in the FIT Council is the top personal achievement of any expert; it also confirms recognition of this or that national association of translators and interpreters, of this or that region at the world level. Prof. Egorova’s membership in the FIT Council shall contribute to promotion of Astrakhan Region as one of the world centers of language studies. Prof. Egorova’s duties will include the development of the community of translators and interpreters in Russia, in the Caspian Region, in Central Asia, and (probably) within the entire space of the five BRICS countries.

The International Federation of Translators (FIT) unites over 100 national associations of translators in 85 countries of the world in five continents. The FIT is in consultancy relations with the European Union, with the United Nations, with the UNESCO, and with other international institutions; at that, it remains above any politics.
