Development of ASU to Help Visually-Impaired People
Young inventors studying at the Institute of Researches & Solutions to Technological Tasks of Astrakhan State University are developing a project to help people with special health needs.
The students have developed spectacles for the blind and visually-impaired. The spectacles contain a distance sensor to enable an individual to orient themselves in the space. The device is also equipped with vibratory motors that signal to warn about obstacles.
The spectacles have been developed in close cooperation with the All Russia Association of the Blind. Thus, our developers could test their invention and get feedback from their future direct consumers. After the trials, the design was changed to make the spectacles less visible and more comfortable to wear.
The project won a grant provided by the Umnik program of the Russian Innovations Assistance Fund. A production prototype is to be manufactured, and a patent is to be obtained. Our inventors already received a cooperation offer from the Yelatma Instrument Making Enterprise, which is a number one manufacturer of medical equipment in Russia.
