Astrakhan State University prepares future mathematicians from the school bench

Senior students of Astrakhan schools, gymnasiums and lyceums took part in the traditional regional competition "Young Mathematician". The teams competed in the assembly hall of the main building of ASU. The event is organised by the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies.

Every year the maths competition gathers schoolchildren from all over the region. In a game form, team members perform tasks, show their knowledge of calculations, get acquainted with each other and in a fair fight claim victory. Lyudmila Tovarnichenko, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies, wished the children good luck, and in the future - successful graduation from school and admission to the place where they would like to go.

One of the important features of the competition is that it is included in the list of events, the results of which are counted as individual achievements of applicants. In addition, schoolchildren who have chosen a mathematical direction for themselves can get acquainted with the university and the target faculty, get to know potential teachers, and plunge into the atmosphere of student life. It is pleasant to note that many participants have already expressed their desire to enter ASU.

12 teams took part in the competition. The struggle was not serious, and the tasks were interesting and creative. In fact, mathematics is not a boring science, but a dynamic sphere closely connected with our life. Aristotle compared it to a beautiful lotus flower, Nobel Prize winner in Physics Niels Bohr said: "Mathematics is more than science, it is the language of science". And even the poet Joseph Brodsky admitted that "there is something in numbers that words do not have".

In a tense struggle and friendly confrontation the winners of the competition were determined. The first place was won by the team of Astrakhan Technical Lyceum, the silver went to School No. 32, and the third step of the podium was shared by Lyceum No. 2 and Gymnasium No. 2.

It is pleasant that new representatives of this noble science appear in the Astrakhan region year after year, and young people begin to prepare for a mathematical career from the school bench.
