ASU Engineers Manufacture Protective Equipment for Astrakhan Doctors

The ASU Center of Viable Technologies in Electronics & Robotics started printing out 3D wares necessary for medical workers during their struggle against the COVID-19. In the nearest future, the first shipments of face shields and their holders will arrive to regional medical facilities. It will all be provided for free.

Astrakhan doctors addressed the university scientists for help to develop the wares. Due to the coronavirus infection spreading, a seemingly simple protective equipment such as a facemask turned out to be in short supply, as it is not designed for being reusable.

Head of the ASU Center of Viable Technologies in Electronics & Robotics Ivan Mikhailov, students Mikhail Gladyshev, Dmitry Reztsov, Alina Salikhova and Pavel Tamkov are working on creation of innovative wares under the leadership of the Director of the ASU Institute of Physics & Mathematics Aleksey Rybakov.

During the work on the project, the young engineers started with choosing appropriate materials for the production of face shields and their holders and designing the samples via 3D software. After the results were approved, the created files were sent for printing out.

The scientists have also developed and are printing out holders for regular medical face masks that are necessary so that the elastic ribbons don’t put pressure on the ears during continuous use. All final products are disinfected according to the WHO recommendations.

It should be noted that the students work on this project at home. There is also an option to execute some tasks collectively in the remote mode. For example, in some cases, some of the young engineers prepare the necessary files and send them to a remote device, and another person prints them out.

In order to discuss new solutions to aid the medical personnel, students and employees of ASU have joined the team where they can talk to specialists all across Russia and exchange ideas.
