ASU MA Students Completed First Stage of WIPO Pearl Project Successfully

It is the third year the students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation have been involved into the WIPO initiative and have developed the terminology database on patent documentation.

The project is implemented within the memorandum of understanding between Astrakhan State University and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Patent documentation includes rather complicated terminology, which must be thoroughly verified and double-checked in the most careful way. The material should be selected appropriately, so that patentees and patent experts can use the correct and common terminology. Our students are currently working on this challenging task.

“The 1st-year MA students have started their work this April. We are pleased to announce that the first stage — the selection of terms in English — was successfully completed, and we have received a very positive feedback from WIPO experts,” says the project supervisor, Head of the ASU Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation Uliana Savelieva.

Geoffrey Westgate, the Head of the Support Section of PCT Translation Service of the World Intellectual Property Organization, and his colleagues held a special workshop with the students of the Caspian Higher School of Interpreting and Translation.

During the workshop, students became more familiar with WIPO activities, analyzed in detail the concept of “term» and the difference between a term and a regular word. In addition, the WIPO experts answered students’ questions concerning their project work.

The next stage in our student’s work is the selection of Russian equivalents and their contexts. At the end of the workshop, WIPO specialists wished the CITS students further success in working on the WIPO Pearl project.
