Scientist of Astrakhan State University Explores Baskunchak Lake Sides

On August 17-30, members of the speleology and karst science unit of the Astrakhan Office of the Russian Geographical Society, headed by Associate Professor of the ASU Department of Wellsite Geology, Hydrogeology & Geochemistry of Combustible Fossils, Cand. Sc. Geography Iliya Golovachev, conducted scientific and educational speleological expedition “Baskunchak 2020, Summer” in the Akhtubinsky District of Astrakhan region.

The expedition tasks were to perform photo surveying and explore the northern karst field. The scientists explored a region, located on the western, northern and northeast sides of the Lake Baskunchak. Karst processes and various forms of the karst relief are widely developed within this region.

Besides, the geographers continued their work on years-long monitoring of the state of karst holes within the explored region.

“In subsequent years, we’re going to carry out detailed exploration of the southern karst field, located in the Sharbulak area,” said the head of the expedition.
