ASU Rector Konstantin Markelov Sends His Greetings on 75th Anniversary of UNESCO
Dear friends! On November 16, 1945 the United Nations founded one of its agencies — the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The organization was founded to “to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter of the United Nations”.
In 2004, the UNESCO Chair “The Learning Society and Human Sustainable Development” was opened at Astrakhan State University as part of the UNITWIN/UNESCO programme, after the appropriate agreement between the United Nations and ASU.
Our university has been cooperating with UNESCO for 15 years, and during this period we managed to extend the list of the foreign countries we cooperate with and increase the number of our international partners.
Over the years of its functioning, the UNESCO Chair of ASU has become a regional centre that contributes to development of innovative programmes and projects aiming to implement the UNESCO's ideas and mission.
In 2019, I was given the honour of becoming a member of the UNESCO Chairs Committee. I hope that my work in the committee will give new impetus to the ASU strategic development.
I sincerely congratulate UNESCO on this anniversary. I am sure that our partnership will become even more fruitful in the future, and activities of Astrakhan State University will further contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
