Why Not Watch Russian Films? Let’s Watch Them!

Students of Astrakhan State University’s Department of Preliminary Education of Foreign Citizens have been to the Kinomax Movie Theater.

Coming from various countries, our newly-enrolled foreign students get into the Russian language environment at once. They study the Russian vocabulary and grammar, read and listen to Russian texts. Besides, they have to get used to the Russian culture and traditions, which are still not very familiar for them.

Watching Russian films is one of the most favorite techniques of teaching Russian that the faculty staff of our Department applies. It helps visualize knowledge of the country where our foreign guests are to spend several years. When our students watch artistic films, they, on the one hand, improve their Russian language skills, and on the other hand, they learn the Russian culture and mentality.

This week another group of our students (citizens of Senegal, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, and China) has gone to the movies to watch a newly-produced film in its Russian original. The name of the film was “He Is a Dragon”; it is based on well-known fairy tales. A beautiful story of love and gaining happiness have really impressed our students. New words and speech expressions uttered by the film characters and mastered during an extra class that took place the next day have enriched speaking skills of our students, who have been to Russia less than four months, and let them become better aware of the Russian culture.
