Researchers of ASU Could Cooperate with World Intellectual Property Organization
Mr. Geoffrey Westgate, Head of the Support Section of PCT Translation Service of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), met Mr. Konstantin Markelov, Acting Rector of Astrakhan State University, on April 13 to negotiate execution of joint projects.
The distinguished guest has already given a speech related to protection of intellectual property at our University. ASU is the only Russian university to have signed a cooperation agreement with the WIPO. The two parties signed that agreement last year.
At the meeting with our Acting Rector, Mr. Westgate named Astrakhan Region a dynamically developing area with a large potential. ASU acts as a trainer of qualified specialists, whereas its researchers aim to develop their home region.
Owing to development of international relations, the issue of copyright protection is becoming more acute than before. This is where Mr. Westgate sees real opportunities of our further cooperation. The WIPO is ready to help our researchers present their R & D at the international level and obtain the necessary patents.
“Your University is a driving force to provide your Region with innovative developments”, the distinguished guest remarked. The most essential thing is to provide our researchers with the necessary information related to protection of their copyrights. The WIPO developed a terminological database on patents in ten languages. “We need experts to check whether this or that term sounds correctly in their mother tongue. Let’s cooperate in this field”, Mr. Westgate suggested.
In his turn, Mr. Markelov remarked that our researchers could help create this database in Russian.
