Astrakhan State University Celebrates Cosmonautics Day
On April 12, 2019 the ASU Faculty of Business & Economy held a lesson dedicated to Cosmonautics Day. Marina Prozorova, a 1st-year Management student, was the main speaker of the event.
The audience got to know that the celebration had been established by the USSR Supreme Council Presidium Decree dated April 9, 1962 in honour of the first manned spaceflight.
On April 12, 1961, the first manned orbital spacecraft “Vostok” was placed in the Earth orbit. It was cosmonaut German Titov, Yuri Gagarin’s backup pilot during the first manned spaceflight, who put forward an initiative to establish Cosmonautics Day in the Soviet Union.
In the Russian Federation, Cosmonautics Day was established as a memorable day by Article 1.1 of the Federal Law “On Military Glory Days and Memorable Dates of Russia” dated March 13, 1995.
In September 2000, the United Nations Outer Space Committee declared the Yuri’s Night celebration in honour of the first manned spaceflight, celebrated by more than 100 thousand people in 75 countries in 2001.
