ASU Lawyers-To-Be Gain Experience of Participation in the UN General Assembly

The Moscow International Model United Nations (MUN) is large-scale business role-play, involving students of leading Russian and foreign universities who gather for five days working in a well-organized simulation of the UN organs.

The project is a unique opportunity for students to take on the roles of delegates, chairpersons, observers, experts of official representatives of the UN member states. 3rd and 4th-year International Law students of the ASU Law Faculty have been participating in the game in the role of delegates since 2009.

The participation in such an event gives public speaking experience and an opportunity to negotiate with other representatives in English, which is very important for International Law students. Besides, young specialists learn how to draft documents and get to know the rules of procedure, which are also important skills for a diplomat.

This year, the students of the ASU Law Faculty took on the roles of delegates at the model session of the UN General Assembly and represented such countries as Ukraine, Argentina and Libya. The meeting agenda included the issue of ensuring the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitary.

The MUN Secretariat not only holds the annual conference but also helps organize such events in other HEIs and schools of Russia. Such cooperation facilitates the development of student games and attract youth’s attention to global issues. It should be noted that it is planned to organize the Caspian Model UN at Astrakhan State University with the assistance of our colleagues, and now we are getting ready for this event.
